In OpenAI's official blog, the company said, “This new funding will allow us to further push the frontiers of AI research, expand our computing infrastructure, and provide increasingly powerful tools to the 500 million users who use ChatGPT every week.” OpenAI is looking forward to its partnership with SoftBank Group, which it believes has a unique understanding and experience in scaling transformative technologies at scale.

It is understood that approximately $18 billion of the financing will be used for OpenAI's Stargate infrastructure project, which aims to build a network of AI data centers in the United States. This project will help improve OpenAI's computing power and quality of service, providing users with a smoother and more efficient experience.

Public information shows that OpenAI announced the completion of a round of financing last October, raising $6.6 billion in new capital at a post-investment valuation of $157 billion at the time. This round of financing was co-invested by Thrive Capital, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Softbank, Tiger Global Fund, AltimeterCapital and others.

Notably, OpenAI expects to more than triple its revenue this year to $12.7 billion, driven by the strength of its paid AI software, which generated $3.7 billion in revenue last year. In addition, OpenAI expects revenue to continue to grow rapidly, more than doubling to $29.4 billion next year.

But along with revenue growth, OpenAI is also facing huge costs associated with the chips, data centers and talent needed to develop AI systems.
